What is a Dental Crown, and How Does it Work?

A dental crown is a custom-made piece of porcelain that fits over your tooth. It's attached to the top surface, so it looks like an extension of your natural teeth. Dental crowns are often used for cosmetic purposes, such as repairing broken, cracked, or damaged teeth. Dental crowns are also helpful in protecting teeth from further damage. Crowns can be placed on either front or back teeth depending on what you need them for, and they are usually fitted after root canal treatments have been completed. Dental crowns are put in place by our dentists who use special equipment to bond the crown onto your existing tooth with resin material.

Why Should You Get a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns can be used in several different ways. Crowns are often placed on the teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy to restore them and strengthen their structure, but dental crowns can also help protect your natural teeth from further breaking and damage caused by decay or general wear-and-tear. Dental crowns work best when they're matched with a strong tooth, so if you already know that there's some weakness in your tooth enamel, it is vital to consider getting a dental crown sooner than later.

How Long Do Crowns Last?

When it comes to dental crowns, you want them to last as long as possible. On average, dental crowns should last anywhere from five to seven years, but this can vary depending on how well you take care of them and the specific material used. If you're diligent about brushing and flossing your teeth every day and keeping up with your regular dental checkups, your dental crowns will likely last longer.

Caring For Your Dental Crowns

Caring for dental crowns is very important, but it's also simple to do. First, make sure that you brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day (morning and night) to maintain the health of all of your natural teeth. It's especially recommended that you use an extra-soft toothbrush since stiff bristles can scratch or damage dental crowns over time. If the dentist recommends special products like mouthwash or fluoride gel, make sure to use them as instructed so that they don't cause any problems with your dental work.

Why is My Crown Loose?

If you're noticing that your dental crown feels a bit loose, there's no need to panic. This is a common issue, and it can usually be fixed with a quick trip back to the dentist. Loose dental crowns can either mean that the resin material has started to break down or that your tooth has shifted since we originally put the crown in place. In either case, don't try to fix the problem independently. This will only damage the porcelain and could cause further issues down the line.

Poorly fitted crowns can also cause dental crowns to fall out. If you're not sure about your current fit, it's a good idea to come back in for an inspection. Our dentists will be able to tell if there is any problem with your dental crown and whether or not it needs adjusting.
